"My goal is to empower you to live a healthy life,
free of pain and sickness, and give you the energy to do the things in life that you want and need to"
About Abby
I am an accountant by trade but have been interested in nutrition since college (a long time ago). I was a self-taught “health nut”, but then I found the Functional Nutritional Therapy Practitioner program from the Nutritional Therapy Association (www.nutritionaltherapy.com) and got a real education in both:
PHYSIOLOGY --the scientific study of function in living systems. This includes how organisms, organ systems, organs, cells, and bio-molecules carry out the chemical or physical functions that exist in a living system;
and
NUTRITION - The science or study that deals with food and nourishment, especially in humans; the process by which a living organism assimilates food and uses it for growth and replacement of tissue.
The education has been eye-opening to say the least. I learned more in that nine months than I had learned over the last 20 years. The education has allowed me to understand how our bodies work and therefore, I'm able to discern fact from fiction when presented the latest and greatest "news".
The prior 18 years before joining the class, I was a "weight watcher". And for the last 10 of those 18 years, I was a vegetarian. I saw myself getting weaker and weaker physically, but just as important to consider, was my constantly having to watch what I ate just to maintain my weight. I would constantly go up 5 lbs (in a couple days) and it would take me several months to get it off, if I even got it off. I was also on a blood sugar roller coaster, often experiencing symptoms of hypoglycemia, that then lead me to eat my way through my pantry almost every night.
These are the “consequences” I have enjoyed since learning how my body functions:
-Eating high-quality fats (which I NEVER did with WW) and supporting my digestion,
I am now assimilating the nutrients that I have been ingesting.
-I have gained control of my blood sugar levels
-I don't diet anymore and as an added plus my energy levels are through the roof!
MY PRACTICE:
As a Functional Nutritional Therapy Practitioner (October 2013) and Certified GAPS Practitioner (October 2017) I work with clients to balance their body chemistry through the foundations of a whole foods, nutrient dense diet, digestion, fatty acid balance, blood sugar balance, mineral balance and hydration. We will go as slow or as fast as you, the client, would like, to transition to a new way of nourishing yourself. I will never take anything away from you without adding something in (like those wonderfully filling and satiating fats!). We'll work together towards your goals. I'll teach you how to listen to your body and what it is telling you.
My passion for healthy living has continued to grow and I have read several good books of late. Trick and Treat by Barry Groves, Grain Brain by David Perlmutter, M.D. and The GAPS Diet by Natasha Campbell McBride, MD. All were extremely informative. I highly recommend them. I have continued my studies learning about the thyroid and have read many great books on that including Stop the Thyroid Madness I and II by Janie Bowkamp and The Iodine Crisis by Lynne Farrow. I've also read several of Dr. David Brownstein's informative books on Thyroid and Iodine.
The required reading during my class greatly enhanced my understanding of physiology and I encourage you to keep educating yourselves as much as possible. Some of the books that were required included Put Your Heart In Your Mouth by Natasha Campbell McBride, MD, about cholesterol and cardiovascular disease, Our Body's Many Cries for Water by Fereydoon Batmanghelidj, M.D, Sally Fallon's Nourishing Traditions and The 7 Day Detox Miracle by Peter Bennett, ND and Stephen Barrie, ND.
I continue to enhance my education almost every day by not only walking the walk, but subscribing to the Weston A. Price Foundation way of life. Truly a great organization that is helping people who have been "through the system" get out of the system and experience better health for their families and themselves.
If you'd like to talk further about a consultation, don't hesitate to call, email or text me. 231-357-0864 is my number. [email protected] is my email.
