One of the best books I have read this past year is The GAPS Diet by Natasha Campbell McBride, MD. She is the same doctor who wrote Put Your Heart In Your Mouth, about cholesterol and cardiovascular health. She holds medical degrees in both neurology and nutrition.
The reason I wanted to highlight her this month is that she has had a profound influence on the care of patients dealing with autism through her GAPS diet. She healed her son of this affliction over 20 years ago. She did this through working with the gut and diet. The small intestine—where 70-80% of our immune system resides via lymph nodes called Peyers Patches —is instrumental in our ability to function normally, both physically, and emotionally.
GAPS stands for Gut and Psychology Syndrome. Not only is this a natural treatment for autism, but also depression, ADD, ADHD, dyspraxia, dyslexia and schizophrenia. In her book, she explains how the lining of the small intestine becomes inflamed and starts to become permeable, letting not only particles of undigested food into the bloodstream, but also parasites and bacteria that may have entered the body through the GI tract. These food particles, being too big to be recognized by the body, are thought to be invaders and the body makes antibodies against them. This creates an inappropriate immune response or an “allergy”. This is where the term LEAKY GUT comes from.
Autistic children have been shown to lack an intact small intestine lining as well as harboring too much bad bacteria in their gut. Whether they inherited this condition from their parents or environmentally, it still affects everything they do.
The measles vaccine has been repeatedly blamed for creating autism. This is not necessarily because of the chemical thimerasol, but because the measles vaccine content is found in the guts of these children.
The Greater Good is a great documentary on vaccines if you want to see why so many are succumbing to this horrible diagnosis. It focuses on the HPV vaccine but also explains how children are being vaccinated for three times as many diseases as they were in the 1980’s. Back then it was 8 diseases, now it’s 24. These vaccines are also given in combination with each other and without regard to whether the child is healthy at the time of the immunization.
Couple this with a compromised small intestine lining and gut flora condition and you have the perfect storm for creating disease. Be sure and watch the movie, don’t just listen and do other things while you’re watching, because there are many times information is on the screen and not spoken. The link to the movie is http://www.greatergoodmovie.org/ It was featured in many film festivals.
Of course, you’ll hear lots of propaganda trying to dissuade you from believing what you see, but understand that this is coming from an industry segment that makes more than it’s share of dollars from administering these vaccines.
If you want to help your adult children getting ready to make you a grandparent, help them to achieve good health through a nutrient dense, properly prepared whole foods diet, void of processed foods and refined sugars. A great reference for them would be The Nourishing Traditions Book of Baby and Child Care co-written by Sally Fallon Morrell (Weston A. Price Foundation Founder) and Thomas S. Cowan, MD.
For those of you who are past this stage of life, the Nourishing Traditions Cookbook by Sally Fallon Morrell is loaded with great info
